Ways To Save Money In The Month Before A Big Vacation

If you have a big vacation or holiday coming up in a few weeks time, you might want to tighten your belt. It could be that the trip has taken away a chunk of your savings, or that you want to save the majority of your money for when you’re there! Whatever the reason, this isn’t uncommon. However, the weeks leading up a vacation can actually throw up some big expenses. You’ll need to source the correct clothing, and find the correct sun protection. You also don’t want to have a totally miserable time before you go, without any treats at all.

So with this in mind, let’s look at a few ways you can save money in the month before a big vacation!

Base your treats around the holiday

Instead of spending money on meals out or cinema tickets in the lead up to your big vacation, stay at home. There, do activities based around your vacation. If you’re headed to Japan, stay at home and try making Sushi! If you’re going to New Zealand, watch a Lord of The Rings film and marvel at the scenery. All three movies were shot entirely in the country! Marvel at the mountains, we mean… not to Orks! Or just snuggle up on the sofa and read a local guide book. These things will get you even more excited for your vacation, and you’re not spending money on expensive activities either.

Buy clothing carefully

If you’d have had many months before your vacation, it would be wise to start picking up bits you need well in advance. Buying summer ideas in the winter are much cheaper, for example. However, if you only have a month to go, you’ll have to be even savvier. Search the internet for coupons and vouchers, like Pacsun coupons. This allows you to save money on things you actually want!

Buy multipack sun lotion

If you are going to a hot or warm country, you will need to protect your skin. It is often the case that multi-packs of sun lotion are cheaper that buying the same amount individual. Also, don’t think that price means quality. As long as it has a high enough factor and both UVA and UVB protection properties, it will do the same job. Don’t be tricked by clever branding or shiny packaging! It may be the same product inside the bottle!

Wait to book your excursion

In some cases, booking excursions and activities for your holiday can be more expensive if done from home. The agency or company may be acting as middlemen between you and the actual people who run the activity. This means that price will be higher, as the middle men have to take a cut for themselves. Instead, it could be really wise to wait until you arrive at your destination to book. Of course, you run the risk of the prices being the same, or what you want to do being fully-booked. But if you’re feeling brave, it could really pay off financially.

What Kind of Holiday Can Your Car Help You to Have?

 photo fullscreen-capture-06252012-111250-am_zpsjsw38dvv.jpg

Choosing what kind of holiday to take should be great fun, but often it turns out to be far more stressful then it need be.

The good news is that by getting away in your car you can vastly increase your possibilities of having an unforgettable trip. What type of holiday will you take in your vehicle?

A Driving Holiday

You might think that any type of holiday you take in your car is a driving holiday. However, in this context we are looking at those trips where driving takes up a lot of the time.

This could mean driving to a faraway destination with a few brief stops along the way or it could mean the sort of adventure on the open road where you split the time between a few different places before heading home.

There are also a couple of different ways of arranging this sort of driving holiday. One approach is to plan it all very tightly, in order to make sure that you go to all of the places you want go to.

Alternatively, you could sort of go with the flow and just make up your plan as you go. This is a more exhilarating prospect for a lot of drivers but might not be right for everyone, especially those who are on a short break from work and need to get back on time.

A Family Holiday

Arranging family holidays can be extremely stressful. If you are thinking of flying away then concerns about taking away enough luggage and keeping the kids entertained on the flight can really start to prey on your mind.

The great thing about getting away in your car is that you can put down something like a Hatchbag car boot protector and then pile in a lot of luggage. This means that you can forget all about airline luggage allowances and having to carry all the stuff to the bus or train.

It is likely that the younger members of the family will also love getting away like this. A car trip is far more exciting to most kids than any other sort of transport.

You can play games together, they can sleep in the back and you can basically relax and treat it all like a big adventure. If your children aren’t used to spending a lot of time in the car then you might want to take them out for a spin a few times beforehand, to make feel comfortable.

In this way, you could even take away the family dog on holiday. With the help of a BMW boot liner you can make the boot a place where they can sit comfortably without making a mess.

You can also stop to eat, to go to the bathroom or just for the kids to stretch their legs if they are getting bored.

A Romantic Break

Is there anything more romantic than heading off into the sunset together on a road trip? This way of getting away lets you spend a lot of quality time together right from the word go.

Rather than getting stressed out in airports or on buses, you can relax together for the whole trip. Just stick on some great music, settle back and enjoy the feeling of being together without any cares in the world.

This is a fine way of getting away to quiet, secluded spots that might be far away from airports and bus routes. There is no need to go where everyone else goes if all you want to do is spend some time together.

Driving away for your romantic break also gives you the enticing possibility of stopping along the way if you spot somewhere interesting you both want to explore.

A Stress-Free Trip

Finally, the most important thing for any sort of holiday is to avoid stress as much as you can. We get away on a break in order to unwind and recharge our batteries but how often do you find that you arrive to your destination more stressed than before?

Airports and big train stations are very stressful places. Part of the problem is that you are reliant upon other people’s schedules rather than your own.

Instead of standing there nervously watching the departures board and counting down the minutes you can take it easy in your car all the way. This is the best way of taking advantage of every single minute of the holiday.

If you want to choose the kind of holiday that you love from start to finish then get behind the wheel and hit the open road next time.

How to Take Care of Your Knees on a Long Distance Charity Hike

 photo GC.hiker15_zpsjhp7vcz1.jpg

A long distance charity hike is an exciting thing to do and a great way to raise money for charity. However, it can be a very challenging feat that can really take a toll on your body – especially your knees.

The constant pounding of hiking for many hours and days can really cause wear and tear on your knees joints and can potentially cause serious injury. At the end of the day your knees will be tired and inflamed from too much more. Your knees are a sophisticated mechanical device and they can wear out if they are overworked without proper care.

It is very important to take good care of your knees so that you can complete a long distance charity fundraising hike challenge event without causing them serious damage. Here are some tips that you should keep in mind for caring for your knees while on a long distance charity hike:

 photo what-five-joint-docs-say-about-running-722x406_zpsblimyr8m.jpg

Knee Care Tips

  • Build up to the long distance hike gradually by hiking increasingly longer distances, so that your body and your knee joints can get used to the activity. Don’t try to attempt the hike without any training.
  • Before you start your walk at the beginning of the day, do some leg stretches so that your muscles will be limber and ready. This will improve your gait and reduce your risk of knee injury.
  • Do exercises to build muscle and strengthen your legs. When you have strong leg muscles they will be able to take the pressure off your joints and handle more of your body weight by themselves, which means less strain on your knees.
  • There are a lot of exercises that you can do to improve your leg muscles, including riding a stationary bike, lunges and step-ups.
  • If you are overweight, try to lose weight and reach a healthy body weight for your height. Did you know that for every pound of weight you lose, there is four times less stress and pressure on your knees?
  • As well as reducing your body weight, make sure that you reduce the weight that you are carrying on the hike. Take a look at everything that you have packed in your bag and ask yourself if you really do need to bring it with you.
  • Try to plan hikes on soft soil or dirt rather than concrete or hard surfaces, which will be easier on your knees.
  • Rather than doing several hours of exercise on Saturday and remaining sedentary for the rest of the week, it’s much better to get regular exercise throughout the week so that your knees can stay supple.
  • Make sure that you are wearing high quality hiking boots and that they do not cause your legs to tilt inward when you are stepping, as this can cause a lot of strain on your knees.
  • When you stop hiking at the end of the day, elevate your legs and rest for a while. This will allow blood to flow away from the legs and prevent inflammation and swelling.
  • Bring along some ibuprofen with you so that you can reduce any inflammation while you are on the hike.
  • An ice pack can also be very helpful to alleviate pain and bring down the swelling in your knees. Apply an ice back for 15-20 minutes at the end of the day while you are resting.
  • You also might find that wearing a knee brace is helpful, as well as using hiking poles.
  • Hiking downhill is when you will do the most damage on your knees. Make sure that you never lock your knees when you are heading down a steep hill. Keep your knees flexed and walk down at a steady and slow pace. Make sure that your feet are planted securely before putting your weight on them and really take your time.
  • It is also helpful to zig zag down a steep hill rather than going straight down, as this will ease the strain on your knees.
  • If you can, try to plan hikes that do not include a very steep downhill section. Or, make sure that it is at the end of the journey so your pack will be lighter because all of your food will have been consumed.

Keep these tips in mind so that you can take good care of your knees on a charity trek!

Top 10 Essentials Every Dorm Dweller Needs

 photo 1_zpsu1dhtps9.jpg

‘Tis the season when high schools let loose their graduates and, a few short months later, colleges welcome their incoming freshmen. For graduates who have set their sights on on-campus living their first year, getting outfitted for the experience can seem like a challenge. However, high school graduation is the perfect opportunity to gather those necessities in the form of gifts from well-wishers, so we’ve created this list of the most important items every future dorm dweller should be requesting.

Bedding

Dorm room beds are an unusual size at 80 inches long. That’s an XL twin, and it requires special bedding as well as mattress pads, bed sheets, blankets and pillowcases.

Electronics

Outside of a major purchase like a laptop, there are other small electronics that a college student could use, such as wireless speakers, portable phone chargers, and alarm clocks. Dorm rooms don’t tend to have a lot of electrical outlets, so a surge protector is a great gift solution.

Decor

Personalizing a dorm room is part of the fun, so inspirational tapestries and wall art are fantastic ideas for presents. Choose those with college logos, inspirational phrases, or customizable details.

Trunk

Storage space is always at a premium in college dorm rooms, so a durable trunk makes a great storage solution. Not only will it get students through many years of school, it can be pressed into service as seating or a table when necessary.

Dishes

College freshmen eat most of their meals in the cafeteria, but there still will be instances in which study time can’t be interrupted. Students will benefit from having a basic set of plates and cups in their rooms for snacks and mini meals.

Shower Caddy

Dorm dwellers can make their trips to the communal shower room a little more personal by bringing their own caddy full of their personal bathroom supplies. Caddies should be waterproof and quick drying.

Desk Lamp

When the roommate is asleep or an all-nighter is in order, a good, mobile desk lamp is vital to prolonging study time. The best options include swing arms that allow for proper positioning.

 Laundry Bag

The only thing that will make the chore of doing laundry slightly more pleasant is to have a serviceable laundry bag that makes transporting clothes to the basement washroom a breeze.

 Backpack

Not just for carrying heavy college books, a backpack can be used for storage in a dorm room or packed full for weekend trips home. Because a lot of the commute to classrooms is done on foot, a solid, ergonomic backpack should be found in every dorm room.

 Bike Lock

Many freshmen get stuck in dorms that are miles away from the rest of the campus. This means a bike will be necessary for getting to class on time, and so a good bike lock is important. The bike racks outside of dorms are prime real estate for thieves, making it vital to be prepared.

It’s time for all those upcoming high school graduates to get packing for freshman year. Any of the items on our list above will make for thoughtful and helpful celebration gifts.

My Tips for Planning a Trip to Chicago

Image via Pixabay

I love exploring the US and what its different states and cities have to offer. Chicago, Illinois is one of the country’s better-known cities. It might not be as popular as New York City or San Francisco, but it still has a lot to offer for travelers. There is a lot of culture and history to explore, whether you travel as a family, a couple, or on your own. You can find excellent places to eat and sights to see, as well as enjoy Chicago’s nightlife. People who enjoy getting active can find lots of things to do in the city too. Here is my guide to going on a trip to Chicago and having an awesome time.

Accommodation Options in Chicago

When you plan a trip, you need somewhere to stay first. Chicago has lots of accommodation options, from luxury hotels to self-catered apartments. I enjoy staying in hotels when I travel because you don’t have to anything for yourself! Choosing a hotel can be difficult, though. There are lots to choose from at different price ranges. Using Hotwire.com or another booking site can help you look at all the choices you have. You could go for luxury at The Langham or something a bit cheaper, like Courtyard by Marriott. Location is important, so don’t forget to consider it.

Getting Around Chicago

Whenever you visit a city, you have to decide how to get around. You might hire a car, but it can be hard to drive in an unfamiliar city. Luckily, larger cities usually have public transport you can use. Chicago has its El trains, as well as buses and the Metra commuter train. If you’re visiting the city, you can get Visitor Pass to use on the El and CTA buses for 24 hours. You can go to Transitchicago.com to find out more. If you don’t feel like getting public transport, you can always take a taxi. But if you’re only going to be within a small area, you could walk around too.

Attractions to See

There are lots of things to see and do in Chicago, no matter what you like. If you enjoy art or history, you can visit one of the museums or galleries. The Art Institute of Chicago is a popular choice, or the Chicago Children’s Museum. Kids and adults will also love the zoo, and the Chicago Botanic Garden is a lovely place to spend a day. There are also many places to see the performing arts, from opera to Shakespearian theater. You can visit many historical landmarks too, such as the home and studio of Frank Lloyd Wright.

Chicago Nightlife

If you’re on an adult trip without children, you might want to enjoy Chicago’s nightlife. There are different scenes for people who enjoy a range of entertainment. You might want to go to a bar or pub for a drink. If you like live music, you can find jazz and blues, or something completely different. Comedy clubs are available too, and if you want to dance the night away, there’s another type of club you can visit too.

Chicago offers a lot for different types of traveler. You can have an amazing time there, whether it’s for a weekend or a week.

Designer Jewellery and You

 photo diploma_advanced01orig_zps7jgstoyz.jpg

Fashion can be hard to follow. Especially, if you want to pair designer clothes with jewellery. You have to choose the right look for you, the right patterns and colour schemes. You have to know what is in and what’s out, along with being realistic.

Just because you see something you like in a magazine, does not mean it will work for you. In addition to this, you also have to factor in the costs of putting together a designer outfit, complete with accessories, as this can be and usually is quite costly.

There are ways around this though, many high street retailers offer fashionable clothes and jewellery that are similar in style, albeit more cheaply made. But you can often find a similar look to the one you want for a fraction of the price.

 photo wedding-ring-image_zps3nyopemg.jpg

Matching accessories

Let’s say you’ve found the perfect outfit. The clothes are great, they make you feel good, but you can’t help but feel as if something is missing. To finish the look, you might want to consider adding some matching accessories. A great way to do this and also relatively easy, is to just add matching jewellery.

However, there is an absolutely vast range of different types of jewellery to choose from. This also includes the finish and quality. You can get anything from metals, including, gold and silver, although these will be much more costly than plastic alternatives. There is also wooden, plastic, glass not to mention other types to look into as well.

Realistically it is entirely up to you as to what material you would like the best, but just remember that some materials will compliment more than others. The best thing to do is to shop around until you find the perfect accessory. There is something out there for everyone…

Where to look?

A good starting point would be to look fashion magazines and see what models are wearing. You can also quite easily do an internet search on what is fashionable and what accessory will go with which item of clothing, right down to a colour match.

There are also many online websites that sell jewellery, from the basics to designer. One great place to look at is called Choblo UK. Stocking its own unique brand, known as ChloBo Designer Jewellery. This website sells all kinds of jewellery that will match almost anything in your wardrobe with minimal effort.

Why choose designer?

So why choose designer jewellery over regular? Well there are several reasons, which are listed below:

  • Designer jewellery is made with higher quality materials, which in turn means will last much longer than a standard piece.
  • The name says it all, the piece has been specifically designed to look the best.
  • If you are a fan of celebrity fashion, then they are more likely to wear designer pieces. If you want to match the look, then doing designer is the easiest route.
  • You are buying someone’s hard work. A person has taken a lot of time and effort to design and make the piece of jewellery, so a lot of care will have been taken to make sure that it is good enough to wear as well as sell. As such will be much less likely to have manufacturing faults, or fall apart after frequent use.

 Popular Now

When looking at designer jewellery, one piece that comes up regularly is the Charm bracelet. A popular piece of jewellery and for good reasons too. Here we list a few reasons why you should consider a Charm Bracelet when thinking about buying any kind of jewellery.

  • They come in a wide variety of colours and materials.
  • They are highly customisable with various charms, which can be inexpensive.
  • You can change the look and feel of the bracelet with ease. By changing the charms, adding more or even taking some away, you can drastically alter the look and feel of your bracelet.
  • By being able to change the look of your bracelet, you can therefore accessorise it with multiple outfit choices.
  • Many people like to use the charms to show people a little bit about themselves, it can be a great conversation starter too.
  • The charms can be cheap, you could even try to make your own and it might also be a good idea to consider swapping charms with friends and family, until you get the perfect charm for you.

There are many reasons to consider buying a charm bracelet, but if you do, then remember whilst there are many different brands to choose from, make sure you go to a reputable source if you want a good quality, long lasting one. There are cheaper versions of charm bracelets out there, but you get what you pay for. It’s worth looking at getting a ChloBo Charm Bracelet, as you can be guaranteed on quality.

How to Get the Best Speaker for Your Conference

 photo Get-More-Better-Speakers-for-Your-Conference-624x390_zpszo9n3u48.png

Having the right speaker for your event is absolutely crucial, as they will be the main attraction of the day and the focus of all of your marketing. This is why choosing the right speaker is central to planning your event when you are setting up a conference at one of the many Cheshire conference venues. You will want to choose a speaker who is highly knowledgeable about the subject matter and is able to present it in a way that is impactful and inspiring.

So how can you find an interesting and relevant speaker that people will want to come and see? Here are some tips that you should consider before you start searching for your speaker.

 photo shutterstock_134247458_zpsyr9jexeb.jpg

Think About the Purpose of the Event

Think carefully about your conference and what you aim for the event to achieve. Are you hoping to educate people in your industry? Or perhaps you are looking to provide inspiration? Or maybe a combination of both? Will people be attending for learning opportunities or to make business networking connections? When you pinpoint the purpose of the event you will be able to figure out the theme and this will help you to determine what kind of speaker you should have.

Send Out a Call for Proposals

Send out an official call for proposals which will give your potential speakers the opportunity to apply for the position of presenting at your conference. If you get a lot of applications you will have a large pool of qualified speakers for your event and from there you can assemble a review panel to review the proposals that have been submitted. You will then be able to rate and review them so that you can choose the best possible speaker.

Attend Other Conferences

Make sure that you check out other conferences within the same industry and there is a good chance that you will discover other speakers that would be relevant to your event. You can contact them and let them know that you loved their presentation and that you would like them to come and speak at your event.

Ask Your Audience

If you already have a dedicated following, you could ask them about which speakers they would love to see live. This is a great way of finding out who would be the best fit for your audience. You can do this by using your social media channels and asking your followers through Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. Or, you could set up a poll on your website and encourage visitors to vote for the speaker they would most like to see.
